Tahini and Molasses
Tahini and molasses is a wonderful nutty creamy spread which goes well on warm toast.
About Tahini and Molasses
Tahini and molasses is one of the simplest and quickest spreads ever. It is a staple part of the Turkish breakfast. You can also consume it like a dessert after meals by simply dipping bread in it.
MAKES 1/3 CUP
PREP TIME: 1 MIN
Tahini is produced from sesame seeds and on its own, it has a slightly nutty, bitter taste. Molasses is a traditional Turkish syrup produced by crushing and boiling various fruits such grapes, carob or mulberry. It’s very dark and rich. On its own, it is slightly too sweet. But blending these two ingredients together creates a wonderful, peanut butter like spread for breakfast.
As a child, I remember eating this mixture on cold winter days. During our Sunday breakfasts, we used to sit next our stove as a family. Whoever sat next to the stove was responsible for toasting the slices of bread. Then, we would spread tahini & molasses on our toast and then top it with few walnuts. Yummy!!! So having this spread always brings back childhood memories.
SOME TIPS & SUGGESTIONS FOR MAKING GREAT TAHINI & MOLASSES
- Combining the tahini and molasses until smooth is crucial to obtain the same taste from each bite.
- The proportion of these two ingredients can differ according to your taste buds. I use 60% tahini and 40% molasses. But you can change the measurements according to your taste. As you add more molasses, the mixture will become sweeter whereas when you add more tahini, the mixture will become more nutty. Taste it and improvise.
- It’s best to only prepare this spread as much as you can eat. If you have any leftover, you can keep it at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 3 – 5 days. Before you eat, give it a quick stir with a spoon and enjoy.
- There are many varieties of molasses such as grape, carob, blackstrap and mulberry. Grape molasses is the one used most commonly for this spread. You should avoid using blackstrap and pomegranate molasses as a substitute. These two molasses are not interchangable with grape molasses. They have a quite different taste and they are used for different purposes. You can find more information about molasses here.
